Fascinating. Well done, Ms. Sweig. Thank you for the good work. The Johnsons were clearly a very astute political team; Ladybird was clearly a full and equal partner in that team, whose political skill and intellect matched or exceeded her husband’s in various contexts. Intelligent, articulate, and highly skilled at the complex social tasks of a political operative. However, that brings up another point. With shared credit for greatness comes shared blame for terrible deeds. If a deeper and more accurate understanding of the LBJ Administration compels us to give Claudia Johnson a fair share of credit for the significant Civil Rights accomplishments of that presidency, it must also accord her a fair share of blame for the vast genocidal slaughter of innocent civilians in Laos and Cambodia.
