On July 16, 2003, Mishra, who was posted as Land Acquisition Officer with Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA) disappeared following which his wife Rekha Mishra filed missing persons report with the local police. However, acting on a tip-off police quizzed his wife, who reportedly had remarried and changed her name to Shabnam, her husband Sayyed Sahab Ali and his brother Karamat Ali following which they admitted to killing Prassna Mishra and also revealed the place where they buried his body. The police recovered the remains of Mishra's body that were buried about 30 km away on Harsud road near Rajur Khedi village.
