This podcast is a gift for white people
This isheartbreakingly real and authentic. And an absolute must listen for all of us white, liberal, and fragile people (like me) who need to stop ignoring these crimes and narratives and need to refuse the “white-washed” version of these experiences fed to us by the media. Not least the fact that these women’s murders are forgotten in the collective consciousness the minute after they happen. I admit I had never even heard of these women or the AAFP, and I am ashamed of myself. Shame on me. But there’s time to learn and act and Dr. Crenshaw is showing us the grace and giving us the facts and the data and revealing the real emotional toll on these women’s communities and families. White people and especially white women, imho, need to take responsibility to educate ourselves and talk to other people in our privileged position who would prefer just to place a “black lives matter” sign on their lawn and show the world how “woke” they are. It’s tough and uncomfortable to hear these stories for white people because we really cannot process them and it shatters our fragile notions and exposes the inherent and systemic racism in our society, and within us. Or worse, we want to believe that these murders are anomalies. It’s absolutely imperative to understand intersectionality aka black women and their perspectives and struggles. It’s on us to educate ourselves and use our perverse yet privileged power to wake up other white people like us. Thank you Dr. Crenshaw for this. It is a gift... a woefully sad and heartbreaking one, but one that I am honored to receive.
