“I plan to revise my review as I listen to more of their library, but getting through the Oldboy podcast was pretty difficult to do. There were multiple times when the hosts went off onto random tangents that had absolutely nothing to do with either film. Once or twice is fine, but in this case it came to the point where it was distracting.
In terms of remake comparisons, Oldboy should be an extremely easy film to discuss. The American remake (2013) of the South Korean classic (2003) is a textbook example of studio interference and just how “watered down” foreign reboots are. Admittedly, the original film delves into some pretty messed up topics I won’t discuss (seriously, watch the original first and go into it with a blank canvas. Don’t look up any info on it, as there are spoilers all over the web), but it’s nothing a grown adult can’t handle.
Perhaps my review is biased because A) I’m a major fan of the original, and B) I can’t help but compare this podcast to others of its kind. This seemed like a much more light-hearted discussion that rarely delved into the themes, cinematography, use of color, and symbolism in both films. Instead, it came off as a couple of casual moviegoers who weren’t able to fully interpret either film.
Again, I plan to adjust my rating as I listen to more.”
