“My word what a podcast and Joe really gets across the magnitude of this unique natural resource that was abused and squandered by what is effectively economic short sightedness by successive Irish governments. I share his anger and also disappointment that we didn’t really appreciate the natural jewel in our crown we had at that time. I spent many years up on the Northwest fishing all over Donegal, lakes and rivers in 70s, 80s and early 90s and can recall vividly many red letter days on tiny nameless rivers and there’d be pools packed with fish. Even on the big rivers, the Lennon, Lackagh, Crana, the runs on those would be so thick that you could walk across the backs of them and this was at the height of high seas drift netting. I recall going to Greencastle Pier for a spot of sea angling, all the the trawlers were in and in the warehouse, boxes upon boxes of salmon, so big and thick you could only get two in a box.
We can do our bit on land, habit, water quality, farms, catch and release but the high seas there appears to be some serious mortality issues.
Btw: Ireland on the Fly, absolute superb podcast keep up the great work lads, you have me in stitches at times on my daily drives from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, with yer ‘what fly did ye get ‘em on’ or my favourite, ‘have you the GPS’ coordinates for that mark?’🤣
These days I’m mostly throwing out here in the mangroves which keeps me sane and also got me back into tying my own again after 10yrs away due to the COVID lockdowns.
All the best, Mark.”
