“First, I liked the performance as well as the little speech leading up to Jackson's well-deserved reward. Jackson played quite well, too, and talked with his audience about the making of "Take It Easy". I've heard him say similar words along the same lines, regarding the unfinished song, at other concerts. This factor, along with his complete lack of acknowledgement ot the medal he had just received, leads me to think Jackson felt just a touch shy or overwhelmed at receiving such an honor. In fact, I think the way he responded to the medal, like it was too big, getting in the way of him and his guitar, was very much a metaphor for his awkwardness about receiving such a big honor. The only real acknowledgement was personal, in shaking Senator Tom Daschel's hand, the quickly uttered, "thank you" and the straightforward eye contact.
I don't think Jackson planned to be such a celebrity, and in his early years, never dreamed he would be publicly honored at prestigious events. He just lived his life by standing up for his principles and telling hispersonal truths. He put his energies and gifts into making this world a better place, something we all can aspire to do. And as for Jackson's humility, well, that just earns him a little more of the honor he is soo not seeking!”
