Good podcast, but very patriotic
I've identified as a Reconstructionist after discovering it almost a year ago because it was the only intellectually honest yet religious form of Judaism that I have found. The KI podcast has been a good source of Reconstructionist material and has allowed me to feel somewhat connected to the community because there are no Reconstructionist Synagogues in Australia yet. However, once I listened to podcast 153 - "Engaging Reconstructionism Through Three Generations of KI Clergy" my whole perspective on the movement has been shaken. Most of the podcast was great to listen to and I got a lot out of it, but near the very end one of the audience members posed a question about the movement's potential name change, to which Rabbi Bernstein responded that the movement is exclusively American and should reflect that fact in its name. I found this comment to be quite insulting and very selfish. Not only do I think that this unnecessarily limits the wisdom that Rabbi Kaplan brought into the world, but I can't comprehend why such a decision (or attitude for that matter) would even be considered? I understand that Americans are extremely patriotic, but this is an entire way of life that allows Jews from all over the world to engage in their heritage and tradition without needing to sacrifice the scientific and moral virtues of secular society. It is very saddening to hear such a prominent leader in the Reconstructionist movement voice such a narrow-minded and short-sighted opinion. I will continue to promote Reconstructionist Judaism here in Australia in the hopes that this opinion was a fleeting moment of patriotism. Surely the movement's leaders wouldn't actually decide to cut off the whole world from the brilliant and life-changing perspective that Reconstructionism offers its adherents. Shalom from Australia.

How delightful it is to listen to intelligent torah study when I am walking the dog. Starts my day in a very thoughtful and positive way. And marvelous to feel connected to other Jews studying torah. Makes me miss excellent torah study sessions I have experienced live before, but no more! Now...Read full review »
