Engrossing
Don’t let the title fool you, “Killed” is not a true crime podcast. Instead, it gives us a peek behind the curtain to glimpse how and why some of the stories we read are chosen for publication . . . or are “killed” and shelved. It’s much more “All the President’s Men” or “Spotlight” than “Mindhunter.” Along the way, we hear from a variety of engaging and accomplished journalists about stories they pitched, researched, wrote, and passionately believed in, but which ended up (at first, anyway) getting cut. We learn about “kill fees,” pitch meetings, and fact checkers. We also find out that motivated journalists often continue to advocate for their stories, and in many cases, some version of those stories do end up seeing the light of day, but often in a different format, or medium, than originally envisioned. As an OG Crime Junkie fan who has listened to practically every Audiochuck pod, this one stood out to me as a welcome and refreshing new venture (that won’t give me nightmares). I was particularly charmed by the episode about the multiple maps of Chinatown. Very highly recommended - I’m looking forward to new episodes.
