Ep 158 - Balancing Art and Environmentalism with Hans Strand
Listen now
Description
Hans Strand, born in 1955 in Marmaverken, Sweden, transitioned from a nine-year career in mechanical engineering to landscape photography in 1990, a decision he has never regretted. Drawn to the untamed and raw expressions of nature, Hans believes, "The wilderness is the mother of all living things." His work spans diverse locales from polar deserts to rainforests, capturing the forces that shape landscapes. Recently, his focus has shifted to human impacts on ecosystems, including water pollution and agricultural landscapes.   Internationally acclaimed, Hans's photography is published in numerous photo and art magazines. He has won thirteen international awards, including the Hasselblad Master Award in 2008, and published seven books centered on environmental themes and humanity's relationship with nature. His images, while frozen in time, tell dynamic stories of movement, evolution, and the passage of time.   In this episode, Hans discusses his evolution from grand landscapes to intimate compositions, and the importance of personal expression in his work. He shares his thoughts on the challenges posed by AI, the influence of social media, and the difficulty of sustaining a career in landscape photography.
