Needs a deeper understanding of craft
Was enjoying the podcast until one of the hosts went on a rant about PC culture in relation to wanting to make fun of accents associated with other races. E.g the ‘Mrs Butterworth’ voice. The comic who had removed that voice from his act made a good point about not making it a value judgment. The host didn’t seem to understand that part of the reason that’s not popular right now is because it’s been done to death and reliance on overused cliches is hacky and won’t get a big laugh, more so than the racist elements. There are comics skilled enough to use accents dependent on how they frame it. That Butterworth voice in particular has always been racist- no one actually talks like that, it was always just used to make fun of black people so no one would take them seriously when they piped up about racism. You don’t need to know all that to know that an overdone cliche doesn’t need to be in your act unless you can make it fresh. Deeper understanding of craft needed for an otherwise promising podcast.
