Erudition + warmth +++
I’ve only q recently discovered this podcast and have listened from the beginning and I’m blown away! Doug is so erudite and displays such passion for his subject and is SO good at conveying his knowledge to those who care to listen. On top of that he is also very humble and it’s clear that what matters to him is the subject, rather than his own aggrandisement or fame etc. I sometimes find his US pronunciation of words grates on my British ears and is a little bit annoying, lol. But hey, that’s nothing in the overall scheme of things... Keep going, Doug! Your work is exceptional and IMHO, a gift to humanity; given in what now seems to be a rare spirit of generosity and benevolence ❤️ And no adverts!!! Adds to the general amazing-ness of this podcast! If I’ve ever got the £ to subscribe to the extras for this pod, I surely will, because I’m sure they’re worth it! Or if I can donate even a little, as a one-off, I will because this quality of podcast is truly exceptional. *Edited to fix typos in the middle of my review because I’d had a couple of glasses of wine when I wrote it and it went a bit wrong 😂 Also wanted to add that: 1) I love the songs! 😂 2) I love the quizzes! (And realise that they did not write themselves. A fab, fun addition for quiz lovers ❤️) 3) From the marked absence of reviews I could see, I get the impression that this podcast is little known in the UK, which seems a shame. I will definitely try to encourage people to listen. Thanks, Doug from a fan in London 🇬🇧 ❤️

More reviews of Literature and History
Literature and History is a fantastic podcast “mashing-up” literature, philosophy and music in the context of history As an engineering student of the 60s, I missed a lot of liberal arts courses, which this well produced podcast helps compensate for. I don’t know how Doug Metzger has the time...Read full review »

Being a dutiful, though ignorant, science major, I never delved very far into classical literature. I slogged through parts of the Iliad, but never appreciated it having been caught up in minutia. Thanks to this podcast I have heard the stories, gotten the main points, and understand it much...Read full review »
