“The Oscars are my Christmas. By which I mean they are something I found joyous, enchanting, and meaningful in my youthful naivete, but now realize are really a crass, drawn-out, commercial sham. Oh well! No matter how devastated I am by travesty upsets like Birdman over Boyhood, The King’s Speech over The Social Network, or Argo over Zero Dark Thirty (or literally anything else from 2012), I keep coming back to the Academy like a battered housewife for more, more, more, of this abuse every year. Little Gold Men gives me my fix and gives it good. Ms. Rich is my favorite voice over at the entertaining Fighting in the War Room podcast, and this podcast has a truly great mix of hosts I almost never want to scream and throw things at. Especially when Joanna Robinson is on. (Kidding!) Since this awards season is particularly weird, it’s great to have some savvy prognosticators guide us through the madness. I’ve already braced for this year’s likely but unfortunate The Revenant sweep — and found a silver lining, in that it’s just sweet proof that Linklater and Boyhood should have won last year, so this year could have been all about that Inarritu, hands down. Seriously, I keep trying to take the kids to hide out at my mother’s, but then Oscar’s on the phone saying come back, he’ll never do it again, this time he means it. And I believe him.”
