Description
Today on Live With The Times, we're delving into the 6th Aliyah of Parshas Lech Lecha, where we see a pivotal moment in Avraham's journey: the covenant, the bris, and the birth of Ishmael. The Covenant of the Parts: Hashem appears to Avraham, not yet Avraham Avinu, and commands him to take animals, split them, and walk between the parts. This act symbolizes a commitment to a covenant with Hashem and foreshadows the future redemption of the Jewish people. Avraham's Fear and Doubt: Avraham experiences fear and doubt when Hashem reveals that his descendants will become slaves in a foreign land. This mirrors our own struggles with fear and disbelief when faced with difficult situations. The Birth of Ishmael: Sarai, unable to conceive, suggests that Avraham take her maidservant, Hagar, to bear a child. This act leads to the birth of Ishmael, but it also creates tension and conflict in the household. The Power of Names: We explore the significance of names in the Torah, as Hashem refers to Himself using different names, each representing a different attribute or aspect of his being. Avraham's Mistake: Avraham doubts Hashem's promise of descendants, questioning how he can inherit the land when he is childless. This act of doubt leads to a delay in the fulfillment of Hashem's plan and underscores the importance of unwavering belief in Hashem's promises. The Bris Milah and the Transformation: After 13 years, Hashem reappears to Avraham, now calling Himself "El Shakai," signifying a shift in his relationship with Avraham. He reaffirms His covenant with Avraham, changes his name to Avraham, and performs the bris milah. Ishmael: A Tzadik and a Wild Man: We explore the contrast between Ishmael, born through Hagar, and Yitzchak, born to Sarah. Ishmael represents a "wild man," while Yitzchak represents a righteous individual. Both, however, are products of Avraham's different approaches to kindness and discipline. Key Takeaway: This Aliyah highlights the importance of surrendering to Hashem's plan, even when it seems impossible or inconvenient. We often face challenges when we doubt Hashem's ability to fulfill His promises. By embracing faith and surrendering to His will, we can unlock the blessings and fulfill the potential that He has placed within us.
