Interviewers with agendas
The interviewers take an aggressive, judgmental tone and posture with Joyce Carol Oates as she explains her experience as a person and writer, and oddly, don’t accept her description of her own experience. She’s trying to explain creativity, but they’re interested in labels and platitudes. Oates says “I’m not really interested in myself” as they try to pin the title “genius” on her, which she rejects. It’s an interesting point of view, but their insistence on hero worship deprives Oates from explaining how she works, and why she’s so incredibly prolific, by putting herself and her ego aside. A missed opportunity to learn from her, but one of the interviewers makes it all about herself. Watch her course on MasterClass if you want a better understanding of JCR. This was a very disappointing interview because they don’t listen to or seem to care about the person they’re interviewing.

I am absolutely loving this series. The hosts ask simple but profound questions to a wide range of thoughtful and interesting guests. The whole thing is rewarding from start to finish. Amazing!

I would have loved to hear Kasia and Peter’s reflections on the interview in some kind of segment at the end of the podcast. I thought there was quite a lot to unpack, especially regarding the...Read full review »
