Just quite beautiful <3
Truly enlightening from Neil and his guests and conversation partners. By focusing on the meaning behind big, shared concepts and narratives, and not (solely) on doctrine and authority, they manage to show us quite beautiful aspects of the human ways of living and interacting with the world and each other. These stories of nature, spirits, animals, gods, humans and greater forces, have created an array of practices that still linger to this day. What do these traditions mean? What have they done / are they doing to us? If you cherish stories about what keeps and kept people together, with a bit of history and a broadening of your insight, then this’ll probably be helpful. The material is presented and the stories told with great humility and interest, and there’s an astonishing intent throughout to compare and reflect upon the various ways of understanding our world. Every corner of the world is covered, at least briefly. Highly recommend this to anyone interested in shared belief. This was a pleasant surprise of a radio series, at least to me. The richness in content is much appreciated. Thanks to all involved!

A fascinating series. Brilliantly set out. Radio at its absolute best. Neil MacGregor strikes gold again, as he did in History of the World in 100 objects.
