Description
Today, Alaskans will vote for president, a U.S. House representative, and state legislature seats, while also deciding on two ballot measures. Ballot Measure 1 would raise the minimum wage to $15 by 2027 and provide sick leave. Ballot Measure 2 seeks to repeal the ranked-choice voting and open primary system. Voters need identification and have until tonight to drop off ballots, with absentee ballots accepted until later dates depending on their origin. Initial results are expected by 9 p.m., though final counts may take weeks as absentee and ranked-choice tallies continue.
Alaskans are voting on a repeal of ranked-choice voting and the state’s single House seat. Incumbent Democrat Mary Peltola, the first Alaska Native in Congress, is competing against Republican Nick Begich. Begich has criticized Peltola's stance on resource development, whereas Peltola emphasizes bipartisan collaboration and her role in advancing projects like the Willow oil project. Repeal of ranked voting would make Alaska the first to reverse the system, with U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski supporting its retention.
The Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District will pay $89,000 to settle a lawsuit over its removal of books from school libraries. A federal judge ruled that the district improperly banned more than 50 titles, including works by Toni Morrison and Kurt Vonnegut, without a review. Following the ruling, 49 of the 56 books were reinstated. The ACLU and Northern Justice Project, representing concerned parents, argued the removals were unconstitutional. The district maintains that the books were “criminally indecent” but opted to settle rather than face a costly trial.
With the 2024 presidential election close, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are rallying in key states. Harris focused on Pennsylvania, while Trump campaigned in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, stressing immigration policies and a new tariff proposal on Mexico. Polls show a close race, with both candidates within the margin of error in critical states. Harris will await results in Washington, D.C., and Trump in Florida, as Americans brace for a tense election night.
