Description
Looking for the sweep over the best team in the American League, the Marlins came all the way back from a 6-0 deficit- scoring three times in the bottom of the ninth- only to fall 7-6 in ten innings in the series finale. Josh Bell's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth tied the game at six, with O's center fielder Colton Cowser making a great play to cut the ball off in the gap and stop Jazz Chisholm, Jr., from scoring the winning run and finishing off the sweep. Ryan Mountcastle drove in the winning run with an RBI single in the 10th, the first run the Orioles had scored since the 4th, and it was only because of the new rule with the runner on 2nd base to start the inning in extras. The Orioles (61-41) have have lost eight of their last eleven games, but they still have a two-game lead over the also-struggling New York Yankees in the AL East. Minus a shaky outing from starter Roddery Munoz (no decision) in today's game, the Marlins (37-66) were great this whole series. Munoz gave up all six of the O's runs, on six hits, in 5 innings. The Orioles tagged him for three homers after putting up just one extra-base hit in the first two games. They've hit an MLB-leading 160 homers this season. Anthony Santander's 28th dinger got the O's on the board in the first. Cowser added a three-run shot in the third, and Connor Norby added a solo shot to lead the Baltimore attack. Bell hit a solo shot in the sixth to get Miami on the board. Xavier Edwards hit an RBI single and scored on Bryan De La Cruz's RBI double to make it 6-3 in the eighth inning, setting the stage for the bottom of the ninth. The Marlins got to O's closer Craig Kimbrel (5th blown save, 28 chances) in the ninth. Nick Gordon's one-out single and a pair of walks brought Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the plate. Jazz drove in a run with a grounder that shortstop Gunnar Henderson booted, then Edwards' sacrifice fly knocked in a run, followed by Bell's bullet in the right-center field gap that scored Gordon from 2nd to tie the game with two outs. Chisholm- who repped the winning run- was held at third base, and Yennier Cano, who got the win to go to 4-2, struck out De La Cruz to end the inning. Cionel PĂ©rez struck out two Marlins in a perfect 10th for his second save. Orioles starter Corbin Burnes allowed three runs on six hits, striking out five in 7 1/3 innings, a season-high.
