“If Carl Hiaasen and Dave Barry met in an abandoned sugar plantation in the middle of the Everglades, and snorted a mountain of coke, and then read ten-years worth of back issues of the World Weekly News, and then dropped acid, and then started writing, they would wake up the next day with massive hangovers and perhaps a few regrets. Once they sobered up, maybe they would listen to “Low Life” and be suitably impressed.
This jaundiced joyride manages to send up every trope of the noir private eye genre while simultaneously serving as an exemplar of the form. It is inspired silliness AND a perfect script. Unlike my pointless intro, every detail of this story serves a function — even the hemorrhoid ring. And yet it manages more than few plot twists and shockers. I binged listened over a weekend and I feel good about it. I was smiling (and sober) the whole time.”
