Vocal fry
The content of this podcast is exactly what I like, great investigative long form storytelling, but the narrator’s vocal fry affectation is unlistenable. For people who say this is their natural voice - it is not. Listen to her voice at the beginning of a sentence versus at the end of the sentence. It is intentional with the speaker apparently thinking it gives them levity. For me, and I know I’m far from alone, it hurts my ears and makes me physically uncomfortable. It’s too bad because I am very interested in the story. I made it through the first episode and thought it was well done, but I just can’t listen to her voice.

Maya is so captivating and is an incredible storyteller. The characters grab you from moments in. I highly recommend for fans of true crime, family drama, and heartfelt oral histories.

The predominance of croaky vocal fry at the end of pretty much every sentence, makes this utterly unlistenable. I made five minutes.

A really great story that just sounds a bit implausible at times but so what. Unbelievably thoughtful and eloquent contributions from some of the protagonists unearthed to contribute to a varied set of voices, sounds and storytelling techniques that all come together rather well. A binge listen!
