What is a gender?
There are podcasts I enjoy and then there are podcasts I have to listen to in ten minute bursts because of how powerfully they stimulate my brain. This show is the later. I am struggling to place Kurapika as a character & have had a wild time thinking about him while listening. He’s considerate and mature, to the point of sometimes being a know it all & a goody two-shoes. He’s headstrong, but not reckless like the boys he’s surrounded by. He gets annoyed at their antics, but knows that deep down they’re deserving of his friendship. In other words, he’s coded the way token girl characters often are (Bulma, Misty, Sakura - he’s giving Hermione). He also looks nothing like the boys he’s traveling with. With his blonde bob and big, bright, magical eyes he looks like if a Sailor Scout crossdressed to enter the Hunter Exam. So when Dre started calling Kurapika “she“ I was convinced he’d dropped the ball & let slip a later reveal. I needed to unplug and think about this revelation. On one hand it made a character I wasn’t enjoying make so much more sense. On the other, it was leaning into trope-y gender conventions I’m not wild about. It was several hours before I returned to the episode & heard the correction, that Dre had accidentally misgendered Kurapika bc he was picking up on the same coding I was. Unless that was just the hosts saving face to preserve the reveal? Was it a bold faced misdirection? Last night I lay awake at 3 AM, tormented by my temptation to look up a Kurapika wiki page. Has the Hunter Exam started yet? Is this what it feels like? To be a Hunter?

However, I didn’t expect to get as deep into HxH as a result, nor did I expect to look forward to these episodes as much as I do their main feed. The media literacy is so high across this crew and that makes...Read full review »

Listening to this and doing a rewatch along. For some reason the character Hanzo never made an impression, so the pods focus on him is doubley hilarious to me.

This is easily in my top 3 podcasts about child torture and weirdly horny clowns on the Internet.
