The Politics of Listening is a series of four podcasts from the Media Futures Hub inspired by the recent ‘turn to listening’ in media studies, cultural studies and political theory. The series was recorded at The Politics of Listening 2018 conference at the University of New South Wales. This interdisciplinary conference brought together scholars, artist-researchers and cultural practitioners from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, South Africa and beyond whose work engages with listening in various ways: as a political practice; as a critical frame; as an alternative politics; as a contribution to justice and/or as an ethics of relation. It was the first international academic conference on critical studies of listening. https://www.politicsoflistening2018.com/ ​ This episode on ‘First Nations Voice and the Right to be Heard’ was the opening keynote delivered by Professor Megan Davis, Pro Vice Chancellor Indigenous and Professor of Law, UNSW, who was a member of the Referendum Council and the Expert Panel on the Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in the Constitution. In this episode, Professor Davis outlines the process of developing the landmark Uluru Statement from the Heart, and the First Nations Voice which would enshrine a norm of listening in the Australian Constitution. ​ Professor Megan Davis is Pro Vice Chancellor Indigenous and Professor of Law, UNSW. Prof Davis is an expert member of the United Nations Human Rights Council's Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Prof Davis is a constitutional lawyer who was a member of the Referendum Council and the Expert Panel on the Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in the Constitution. Megan is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law and the Australian Academy of Social Sciences and a Commissioner on the Australian Rugby League Commission. Megan supports the North Queensland Cowboys and the QLD Maroons.
