“I was cynical at first. I was born in the seventies and I’m not sure how I feel about people who are in their twenties now and talk about this stuff A LOT often self diagnosing all over the place (and, it seems, pitying themselves a lot). I worked in a student wellbeing centre for a period so I saw the attitudes of this generation to mental health. It always seemed like the most vulnerable were the ones who weren’t loud and proud and would literally slip through the gap... However, I have found this educational and I’m finding more compassion for everyone on the spectrum no matter the label. None of these guests seem like people who are insincere and I admire how they’ve ‘owned’ their diagnosis and found a way to cope. I’m trying to do the same... and work past internalised stigma which I didn’t even know was a thing.”
