An Ukrainian immigrant raised in New York City, Vindman took advantage of every opportunity presented to him. Following in the steps of his old brother, Vindman would enroll in Army ROTC and then commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. As an infantry officer Vindman would led platoons in Korea, Germany, and Iraq; even earning the Purple Heart. However, he would later become a Foreign Area Officer and expert in all things Russia and Ukraine.
