Hunters in Conservation
On this episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast we talk about conservation. Joining Mark are guest Kyle Daly and Dan Born. Kyle is a wildlife biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Dan is an archeologist and environmental analyst formerly for the U.S. Forest Service. They have both worked in wildlife studies for many years. Therefore they have great knowledge of the natural world and how hunters play a part in it.

Conservation has had a long history in the United States. Historical figures in the fight for conservation have stressed the importance of public lands and waters. This is so that anyone, not just the wealthy, can have access to wild game and fish. This idea is what helped create the North American Conservation Model. For example, here is how the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service defines it:
The North American Conservation Model
Wildlife is a public resource
Markets for game are eliminated
Allocation of wildlife by law
Wildlife can only be killed for a legitimate purpose
Wildlife species are considered an international resource
Science is the proper tool for discharge of wildlife policy
The democracy of hunting
These rules are meant to help protect our wildlife and that the government manages these resources with a science-based approach for all the people. In addition, hunting is also a privilege of all the people and not just those with wealth and power. For more about the history of conservation and how we as hunters have played a part in it, listen in to this episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast!
