“I remember one of my Mom’s “lady magazines” (GOOD HOUSEKEEPING, McCALL’S, REDBOOK) had an article and photo of Judith Viorst. My Mom loved Judith’s writing and I remember how beautiful and exotic looking she looked in the photo shoot. (I grew up on a farm in Indiana, so she looked exotic to me!)
My Mom was a farm wife who taught her 4 daughters 4-H, Girl Scouts, Sunday School, how to grow a garden, cooking, and canning. But, she also was a feminist, opening our minds to college and careers. She made us watch Watergate hearing that summer (loved Senator Sam Ervin), work at Democrat campaign headquarters as volunteers, and as teens, we volunteered at Planned Parenthood.
Listening to your interview with Judith brought back memories of my Mom and her some of her favorite feminists Judith, Erma Bombeck, and Joan Rivers.
These ladies showed 4 Indiana farm girls that women can be intelligent, witty, funny, and employed.
After your podcast, I purchased Judith’s “decade” books for my daughters, my friends, and myself.
Thanks Zibby! Thanks Judith!”
