Great for Advanced Players Who Like Pros
I am fairly new to MTG, only having played since Khans was released. I am already a big fan of the game, and I discovered this podcast looking for ways to improve my game. LIKES: There are some high-level skills that you can learn from listening to the conversation between Penrod and his Pro guests. I have learned some skills about how to read opponents, how to draft better, and how I should present myself in-game. Penrod has a pleasant demeanor and is easy to listen to most of the time. His manner is in contrast to some other learning sources for Magic, and it is part of the reason I have listened to all of his podcasts to date. DISLIKES: While the introduction to the podcast says that it is suitable for players just moving past intro decks, I feel that it is more geared toward those who have been playing Magic for a long time and who have been familiar with Pro players through the years. Being fairly new to the scene, I do not recognize the players who are interviewed, and I can't really put to use the big tournament tips that are highlighted. Beyond that, much of the first part of each interview is story-telling from the interviewee about events that, while sometimes interesting, won't help me improve as a player, and when they finally get to a segment that should be about strategies, I find myself listening to what you should/shouldn't after the game is over. I'd much rather listen to tricks and ideas for a better experience while playing. Another note is that each interviewee is asked the same base set of questions. While this helps keep consistency of the podcasts theme, I really wish that each episode were more focused on a particular skill or set of skills rather than the guest at hand. The last minor irritation I have is that Penrod uses repetitive little phrases in between questions like "That's awesome, that's awesome" or "Sweet". It became a little tiring, as it accentuated the list of questions that was being moved through. While a unique podcast, I would not recommend it for new players unless you are looking to delve into pro tournaments or learn about tournament history. I highly recommend it for players who have longer history with MTG or who have interest in pro players and what they have to offer in terms of their history and high-level play.
