Making Memories

Description
Namaste, Welcome to SAM-VAD (Together In Conversation), as we begin today ‘let us remember, ‘What we give our Attention to matters.’ Our life’s experience would ultimately amount to whatever we had paid attention to. Attention: is important and most of the times we are indifferent to it. It is as fundamental as food; and we go blundering about, seeking ways to assuage the craving, instead of learning how to provide ourselves with what we need, sensibly and calmly. Once our attention is drawn to the mechanism of why and what we give attention to, it is as if a veil has been stripped off and we become freer in our action and choices. This week I bring to your attention another excerpt which we have titled – Making Memories from the book titled ‘Uncharted’ – How to Map the Future Together by Margaret Heffernan. In her bold and invigorating new book, Margaret Heffernan explores the individuals, organizations and mindsets that aren’t daunted by uncertainty but seize the challenge of making the future for them-selves and explores answers to these questions, how can we think about the future? What do we need to do – and who do we need to be?  Making Memories According to Eleanor Maguire professor of cognitive neuroscience at University College London to make memories requires us to be alert and attentive, aware of where we are and what we’re doing. Distraction and overload, Maguire says, impedes this, reducing our ability to create memories for future use. Just like a taxi driver, whenever we travel to a destination our mind is drawing and storing a mental map of the environment, logging landmarks and making memories. So less awareness leads to fewer memories. If the brain area responsible for navigation is used less it tends to shrink. The less we engage with the here and now, the more impoverished our scenarios of the future become.
