“I am the literal definition of a comic book newbie. I started reading comics only just a little over a month ago. I had always been fascinated by comics but I was never sure if it was “appropriate” when I was in school (even though I read manga and watched anime - note that this was long ago, way back in early-to-mid-2000s land when it wasn’t cool to be “nerdy”; thankfully I am long out of school by now). Much later after I got over that ridiculousness (after all, I’m probably the nerdiest gal anyone ever met, why should I let some outdated mindset about who is allowed to read comic books stop me!), I again was halted when I realized how intimidated I was by how huge this world is. I wasn’t really sure where to start. Where do you even BEGIN to start in a world of stories that collectively has over 50+ years of history!! However, I finally got my ultimate push to dive deep into this world very recently in an attempt to fill the void left by “Avengers: Endgame”. The MCU was a wonderful introduction to this world and these characters I’ve come to love dearly, and I decided I wanted *MORE*. Insecurities be darned.
So, after doing my “homework” (as I’m wont to do, being an avid researcher and always wanting to go in prepared), I bit the bullet and purchased a yearly subscription to Marvel Unlimited and never looked back. Using the Comic Book Herald website and this podcast as a guide, I dove right in and have enjoyed every single colorful frame I’ve read so far. This podcast has been such a help in getting started, knowing where to jump in at certain points, and filling in the history and major beats of stories I haven’t had the chance to even scratch the surface of yet and I am looking forward to going deeper with the stories of characters I’m less familiar with. And, most importantly, overall, this podcast has taught me that there is no “wrong” way to enjoy reading comics (a welcome relief for someone who tends to overthink every little thing). Not to mention the hosts are upbeat, informative, and extremely fun to listen to! I started at the beginning and I’ve just caught up to the early 80s.
I am very much looking forward to keeping up with the show as they tackle more stories going forward in this “Marvelous” World that I adore. Thanks, guys! Keep up the great work! : )”
