Extremely Important Work
Dear Potential Listeners, If you are sitting in your office and you are lucky enough to have a window, you might find yourself watching the squirrels, rabbits, juncos and sparrows forage outside. If you enjoy this interaction with nature and would like to learn how you can watch additional species during your work day such as hummingbirds, butterflies, raptors and songbirds, you need certain plants to be growing outside. Listening to this podcast can be your first step in learning where to start, who to go to, and what to say when discussing these ideas with your admin or landscape professionals. When I was working as a full time English teacher, I couldn’t help but enjoy these same wildlife moments from my classroom window. I started listening to this podcast after resigning to stay home with my children during Covid. It was an emotional time but we had our reasons for making this double to single income choice. Shortly after that time, my local land trust hired its first executive director and because I listen to this podcast, I felt confident enough to offer him my skill set. We now have invasive species removal events planned and I even convinced my local native nursery to donate some native plants to teach the public about native replacements for burning bush. Oh, and did I mention that I have been grant proposal writing for the land trust? So far I have worked on bringing in funds for GIS and now I am working on pollinator enhancement. While working on this grant, I called Sam Droege about some of my native bee questions and he was incredibly encouraging and pointed me toward the direction that I needed to go. It’s because I listen to this podcast that I knew who to call and how to make my proposal go beyond honeybees. So if you are welcoming of a change in perspective and would like a chance to make a difference that matters to so many living creatures, hang out with Tom and Fran. You will learn more from them and their guests than you could imagine. These hosts truly care about not only education but maintaining open and round table discussions. It is my great hope that their work will inspire you as it has inspired me and please know that if you bring the plants to your workplace and yard, wildlife will be there too. Thank you Tom and Fran. Yes, your work is extremely important! Hope to be in touch sometime in the future…my last name is pronounced, St. George…it’s French, not British 😉
