“Sad but illuminating, particularly about life inside NZ’s institutions, however they were described. I grew up near Kimberley hospital and visited often. My mum became a foster grandparent to Sandy, a young woman who mum always described as “intelligent” and “fun-loving”. We lost track of her when Kimberley was closed and I have always hoped she went on to have a happier life in the community. Hearing about the conditions and treatments in Porirua hospital was also meaningful, as my father used to talk about having had my mum “committed to the loony bin” when I was very young. She spent an unknown amount of time at Porirua and I hate to think of what she experienced there. In much later life we realised she had Asperger’s and this went a long way toward explaining what had been perceived as peculiarities.
I hope for an update one day about Nellie’s first child.”
