“Back in 1992, I was 11 years old and my dad took my cousin and me to a double feature of Newsies and Beauty & the Beast. If any indication of my future loyalties, I ended up falling asleep during B&B ;)
When it was released on the Disney channel, I recorded it via VHS and watched the movie every day until the tape wore out (~120 times) and begged my dad to buy me the commercially produced VHS at Toys R Us. Eventually, I bought the DVD as an adult (at Disneyland) and I wouldn’t be surprised if I’ve seen this movie over 500 times. I also saw the musical on Broadway and though I enjoyed it, the movie is where my nostalgia and love kicks in.
Aside from clearly dating myself in this review, I think it’s obvious that I have a lifelong love of Newsies so when I stumbled upon this podcast, it was with wariness and low expectations (sorry Erin & James!)
Imagine my delight as I’ve started binging (minute 50 now) this show and find myself laughing out loud, shouting back and falling in love with the movie once again. The best part of listening is the love and appreciation of the movie from Erin & James. I have spent my lifetime putting up with heckling about this being my favorite movie and this podcast makes me feel like yes, there are people like me (and don’t veer into crazed “fansie” land — although I haven’t finished the podcast yet, haha). I love the historical pieces as well as the tangents along with thoughts that I have shared over the years (where do the Jacobs live? Are they Jewish? How much do they pay to love in the lodging house? Who would I FMK?)
And introducing me to Blood Drips Heavily on Newsies Square?!? Worth the price of admission alone.
So thank you for this amazing podcast. My greatest regret may be that I found it a year too late and couldn’t live tweet in response, lol! Can I make a podcast about this podcast?!?
TL;DR definitely worth the listen if you love the movie”
