Serious Promise, But Serious Flaws
On one hand, this pod is an intriguing twist on a familiar narrative - a sitcom about 20-somethings in [insert hip city here]. The characters are quirky, but not too weird to diverge off mainstream acceptance. And the writing deals with real issues that millennials can identify with (self-doubt about ability to reach professional goals, guilt for leaving home to follow your dreams, etc.). The show even has a perfect intro/outro theme song and jingle that fits with this type of sitcom. It’s basically a podcast version of Friends, but modernized to fit 2020 and simplified so that there are only a limited number of character storylines to follow for an audio medium. But the show leans in a little too heavily on sitcom troupes. The basic structure is pretty simple: the characters find themselves in a situation, and one character always gives an important speech at a pivotal point which leads the other character to the resolution we all expect. You never really have to wonder whether the character will make it out of the mess we find them in. This is comfortable, but not really unique or interesting. At the end of the day, the only thing really pushing me to listen is that it’s a podcast version of a familiar type of sitcom. I can passively listen without having to challenge myself or pay attention to the finer details. Also, one of the central characters, Ali, is defined by her constant screaming and generally incredulous nature. This was not thought out for an audio medium as I regularly have to adjust the volume controls whenever she’s in a scene because she’s just screaming into my eardrum. This is a nitpick, but rather annoying.

This is a rip-off of Friends, and not as good. Not interested.

Oh man. This podcast is so good? Not to sound like Stefan from SNL, but it has EVERYTHING. Heart. Humor. Amazing directing. Killer sound design. It’s so difficult to do that in an engaging way in an audio medium and the directing is just really well done and the sound design is just absolutely...Read full review »
