Podcasting... with Power!
I first subscribed to Nintendo Power when I was 13 and it was, without a doubt, what pushed me into becoming a hardcore Nintendo fan. I was heartbroken when the magazine ended its run, so I’m absolutely delighted to say that this podcast - which was so unexpected - is better than any kind of revival I could have asked for. Chris is a good-natured and inquisitive host, and as the former editor-in-chief of NP, he immediately brings a familiarity to fans of the magazine. The panel of guest hosts (which I imagine will change from week to week) provided a nice balance of humor and insight. The real treat is the interview with Eiji Aonuma and Hidemaro Fujibayashi in the second half, which was easy to follow thanks to the translators, and contained some great nuggets of information. This is the kind of content that a first-party Nintendo podcast should have, and potentially its main draw given the massive number of gaming podcasts out there. Down the line, I’d love to see some more of the segments included in the original Nintendo Power make an appearance - listener feedback, Power Profiles, maybe even Don’t Hassle the Hoff. If I have any concerns, it’s that a first-party podcast won’t be impartial to the company’s games. I hope that the show’s guests will be able to speak honestly about the games; Nintendo’s not a perfect company, and sometimes being a Nintendo fan means embracing its mistakes while celebrating its successes. This is the key difference between being a show for fans and being a company PR machine. I hope the show aims for the former whenever possible! In short; this isn’t just a nostalgia bomb, it’s a fun, well-produced podcast by folks who really know their stuff, with really compelling interviews with some big names in Nintendo. I’ll be eagerly awaiting new episodes, and I’m very excited to see how the show grows!

It’s a new great avenue for Nintendo to reach out to fans, by providing some great content that we might not have known before. Hope that they can do 2-4 of these per month.

I grew up reading (and re-reading) Nintendo Power magazine every month, and I also really enjoyed listening to Chris Slate previously on the Power Pros podcast, so this project seems perfect for me. This is very well made, and it's clear that the people involved really love the Big N. Keep...Read full review »
