Is Data Illiteracy Holding You Back? How to make better decisions

Description
Episode #320 // Was Lucy Letby wrongly convicted in her healthcare murder trial? We may never know… but what we do know is that her trial was plagued by serious flaws in the statistical evidence presented by the prosecution. I find it just a little disturbing that the judge, lawyers, and jury were so innumerate, that they accepted the bogus statistics on face value. This lack of numeracy is probably just as endemic in business! But everyone talks a good game, and it’s often difficult to see the glaring holes that lie just below the surface. During my corporate career, I worked with a bunch of board directors, career politicians, and senior executives who exhibited a stunning lack of basic numeracy. In today's episode, I review the cautionary tale of the Lucy Letby trial; I take a look at how to build a robust process for decision-making; and I finish with eight ways to overcome the scourge of data illiteracy. Trigger Warning: Sensitive Content This episode includes a discussion about the trial of Lucy Letby, which touches on distressing topics such as infant deaths and the handling of evidence in serious criminal cases. These subjects may be particularly difficult for listeners who have been affected by the loss of a child or cases involving medical or legal malpractice. Please proceed with caution and take care while listening.
