First Not a Podcast
In Number One the two commentators give a notion of the depth of their knowledge of ASOIAF and the Game of Thrones videos through Season 7. Like a freewheeling book club discussion with your nerdiest friends, they tease out insights that were only lurking in the shadows of your own perceptions of the story and of GRRM’s vision. They give new resonance to his laying out of the grand story arc and the first taste of Westerosi society and culture. They were so fascinating that I wanted to hear every word. Unfortunately I could not while driving to work, admittedly a less than ideal venue. They sit at different distances from the microphone, and far enough that the room’s acoustics matter. The hard flat wall surfaces are not kind to the conversation. Neither is the inadequate gain control. When the softer-spoken one launches into a rapid series of comments I had to turn up the volume to hear him properly. Then when the louder/closer-to-the-mike one responds the volume is painfully loud. I hope that they can improve the sound quality, because this feels like a “really good shew”, to play on Ed Sullivan’s favorite expression. Headsets? Curtains? I subscribed with delight and I intend to follow them down every rabbit hole as I re-read the books.

I listened to the audiobooks the first time, so I’m looking forward to a slower reread, following along with the hosts.
