Impersonal and poorly executed
First of all I’d like to say I’m a long time fan of Kristen! She usually is very personable and relatable so I was very excited when I found out she was making a podcast! However, after listening to the first episode, I’m left feeling very disappointed. Firstly, the title is very clickbait-y, which I didn’t expect from a chill, “older sister” kind of advice podcast. Kristen didn’t even start telling her story until 10 minutes into the podcast and the story itself was hard to follow and mostly just awkward silences as she tried to remember details and way too many bunny trails from her and Alex. Throughout the 9 minute story, she spends maybe 30 seconds on the part of the story where the condom actually broke, and she just said it made them both “freak out.” As for Alex’s story, she literally just said “we did it and it wasn’t very good.” No details, no further explanation, nothing. They could have filmed this podcast in 3 minutes and it would have covered the same amount of information. Secondly, Kristen tries to sell this podcast as being laid-back chats with your “older sister” but at the end of this episode she shares that she’s always wanted to do this because she doesn’t have any younger siblings and has never filled this role before. This was PAINFULLY obvious to me throughout the 30 minute episode. Listening to Alex and Kristen was like 3rd wheeling with 2 best friends. Half the time they were laughing at their own inside jokes, which I didn’t get, and when they did tell their stories, they talked to each other, not the listener. I felt like I was eavesdropping on their private conversation, where every few minutes they would acknowledge my presence by saying things like “yeah, just make sure you’re comfortable your first time!” Thirdly, for being called ODDvice and tackling a topic that is very personal to most girls and potentially very awkward or intimidating THEIR VERY FIRST EPISODE, they weren’t very open with the listener about their experiences! Just as Kristen was getting to the TMI bit, they both got very awkward and tried to end the story as quickly as possible. They went into lots of detail about the good portions of both of their stories but jumped right over the parts that would have actually been relatable!! The whole time it just felt like they were bragging about how well the experiences were for them because they didn’t fully discuss the awkwardness/kept apologizing for how good their experiences were! All in all, the podcast wasn’t relatable or enjoyable to me at all. And I really enjoy Kristen’s personality so I’m a bit confused on why this episode turned out the way it did. AT THE VERY LEAST, if they’re going to tell stories, they should make sure they KNOW THIER OWN STORY before they try to record it on a 30 minute podcast. I would also like it if they talked to THE LISTENER, ya know the person they’re recording this for, instead of just to each other, because it makes the whole listening experience very uncomfortable. I will be listening to future episodes of this podcast in hopes that it’ll get better! I’m willing to write this off as “just the first episode” because it honestly doesn’t seem like they put that much effort into it. I wish the best for Alex and Kristen and look forward to next week’s episode!
