“Apparently, Full Time ‘has a little bit of news’ for us all. How twee. Alas the news is that they are ending the podcast. Give me a break.
I am really quite fed up of finding and listening to women’s football podcasts which are subsequently cancelled, downgraded or no longer updated.
No, I don’t want to go to Meg Linehan’s ‘Full Time’ instead. I’m sure she’s great, but the podcast is completely US-centric with the odd tokenistic story about the rest of the world. Every single episode I could find going all the way to the summer was either given a title referring to the USWNT at the Olympics or the NWSL. One referencing Arsenal and Chelsea initially seemed promising, but of course the programme was detailing the pre-season friendlies in America. Even the language is infuriatingly alien to an British English speaker - there’s no such thing as the abhorrent ‘PKs’ and nobody in England ever uses the word ‘cleats’ (‘Alex Morgan hung up her cleats.’ Yuck). It’s not soccer. No way.
The self-evident point of this programme was to be a counterweight to the American game and present matters relating to Europe. With the greatest respect to Meg Linehan, her area of expertise is very clearly the NWSL and the USWNT - does she really have extensive knowledge of the downfall of Turbine Potsdam or Girondins de Bordeaux disgraceful mistreatment of its women’s team? Maybe she does, but it’s clearly not her main focus (and there’s nothing wrong with that). Europe deserves more than a footnote or a quick ten minute discussion amidst the NWSL chat.
How about a podcast covering the WSL, the European leagues and the Champion’s League properly? Oh wait, we had one.
Just another example of the lip service that many media outlets still pay to the women’s game. This one is especially rubbish, because I loved every episode. I very much doubt that the same decision would be taken regarding a podcast covering the top men’s leagues in the UK and Europe.
Perhaps you should change the name of this now redundant podcast to ‘closing time’ instead. Another timely reminder why a subscription to The Pathletic is simply not worth it for fans of women’s sports outside the US.”
