“I listen to nine podcasts regularly, and the The Corner of Mainstreet is my favorite. If you like Las Vegas, this is the podcast for you. If you like DOWNTOWN Las Vegas, this podcast is REALLY for you. What I like best is listening to Jonathan Jossel, the CEO of The Plaza, who doesn’t seem to be the normal casino CEO to me. He’s the kind of guy you would want to sit down and have coffee with; he’s also hilarious. His co-hosts, Lisa and Gary, have a good rapport with him, and they ask great questions of the guests.
Speaking of the guests, some of them you already know if you know Las Vegas fan: Dr. David Schwartz, Derek Stevens, and Oscar Goodman. And then occasionally they’ll have an unexpected guest, like Flavor Flaz (this is not a typo!), who seems to be a personal friend of Jonathan Jossel. There hasn’t been a bad episode, but some of my favorite guests were Myron Martin (of The Smith Center), Ryan Growney (of South Point Casino Hotel), the blogger from Virtual Vegas, Jonathan Ulman (of The Mob Museum), and James Trees (from Esther’s Kitchen).
I also like when they interview their own employees; they really sound like The Plaza is a great place to work, just like a family. It was funny to hear Mary talk about her boss right to his face. Finally, not only does the podcast tell you more about Las Vegas and downtown Las Vegas, it lets you know what’s going on at The Plaza without making it sound like a commercial. (And I assure you, this podcast is NOT a commercial for the hotel). The episode with Weldon told me that the bingo room has changed a lot since the last time I played there. I’m not a bingo player, but I stumbled on the bingo room years ago when I was looking for something to do. It was fun! And it seems like bingo at the Plaza has changed a lot since I played there; I remember buying a bingo dabber (is that the right word???) from the vending machine outside the door.)
It has also been interesting to hear how the Plaza (and other hotels and casinos) are dealing with the COVID situation.
So do yourself a favor and listen to the podcast. You’ll be hooked. And you’ll want to plan your next trip to Vegas soon.”
