“The episode I listened to was harping on about size of government — I mean if you really want more taxpayer money spent on consultants then smaller government is going to be fantastic. You’d think the NZ government had money to burn listening to this. Way better to hire the consultants as staff, yep, it’s a bigger government but you will have the right experts for all the critical work in house, less need for consultants, boom! Money saved.
I thought I’d be in for interesting politics. Maybe I picked the wrong episode, or maybe these guys are hoping to get hired as consultants by a small government that won’t know its you know what from its elbow.
Tbf they did acknowledge they don’t know what size government is right. To that I’d suggest that it very much depends on what you want to do. If you’re an ambitious government, & need the people to get your projects done, keep them as staff. If you want to sit on your hands as a government, by all means, let staff go, then hire them back as consultants for 4 times the cost when you inevitably need them. I have never worked in or around NZ government, so what do I know, right? 🤷🏻♀️”
