Vapid Torontonians have Quippy Experience
Pretentious, leisurely and yet severely idiotic hipsters Claire and Judith encounter the paranormal when renovating a multimillion dollar home that Claire has inherited. Finding time between yoga classes, CrossFit, demonic possession, a messy breakup and token alternative lifestyle adventures to occasionally participate in the culture war for some unknown reason, we’re never really sure if the antagonist is a demon, or capitalism itself. It’s difficult to root for the two self-obsessed main characters, who seem to have no insight whatsoever into the world around them. I can say, however, that the protagonists perfectly capture the spirit of Toronto. The quippy dialogue doesn’t land. I suspect the insertion of politics into the story was done in an effort to sway the CBC into funding the podcast. If that is the case, then bravo to the producers. Having said all that, the background story is interesting and the effects are spooky enough to be engaging. If the writers can carry their strengths into their next project while leaving the snark in the dust, they could hit a grand slam. This one, however, falls short.
