Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Abhijit Banerjee is currently the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 2003 he founded the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) along with Esther Duflo and Sendhil Mullainathan, and remains one of the directors of the lab. He is the recipient of the 2019 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, awarded jointly with Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer "for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty." His areas of research are development economics and economic theory. He is a member of J-PAL's Executive Committee and previously served as co-chair of J-PAL's Education Sector. In addition to serving as a director of J-PAL, Abhijit has served as a lecturer at J-PAL training events and on J-PAL's Innovations in Government Initiative (IGI) Review Board.
