On March 11, 2019. Christine Silawan, a 16-year-old high school student, was found dead in a vacant lot in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.  Half of her face was skinned to the skull, her body was stabbed twenty times, and she had signs of sexual assault.  The gruesome nature that Christine Silawan endured from her killer sparked nationwide outrage, which led to various groups urging the government to reinstate the death penalty.
