The upcoming 2025 midterm elections are near, which means the future of our leaders will be based on our votes this coming May.  Through the years, there have been various incidents or initiatives from well-known or infamous politicians that broke or paved the way for their careers in public service. On April 23, 2012, a supposedly peaceful dismantling of a wet market quickly escalated into violence, resulting in one death and 40 injured people after the informal settlers of the Silverio Compound, fearing that they would lose their homes, confronted the police along Sucat Road in Parañaque City. The sole casualty was Arnel Leonor, a 19-year-old resident of the said residential compound, lying on the pavement with a fatal gunshot wound in the head. The police brought him to the nearest medical facility, but he was declared dead on arrival.  This violent demolition in Paranaque City sparked discussions that highlighted the complex issues surrounding urban development, housing rights, and the need for more humane and inclusive approaches to addressing informal settlements.
