“I’ve enjoyed some of the interviews on this podcast, but Derek Thompson’s need to constantly present himself as a leading theorist on every topic gets really exhausting. A little intellectual humility and genuine curiosity would go a long way. I mean, I don’t really need to hear Derek give another three minute explanation of why the guest just misunderstood his claim and they really, totally agree (when, in fact, his original point has just been demolished by the guest). These problems are even more annoying when the guest is also only a pseudo-expert (note how many “authorities” on this show aren’t academics or researchers, but, instead, venture capitalists looking to push a “vision of the future” in which they’ve heavily invested). For example, perhaps the dumbest podcast interview I’ve ever heard was the Ted Gioia episode on how old music is (supposedly) killing new music. What happens when a completely out of touch boomer and a nerdy millennial try to explain the state of popular music today? An hour of false premises, incoherent conclusions, and some pretty hilarious assertions about the way young people consume music. You’re clearly a smart guy, Derek; find a lane and stick to it.”
