Lost the magic
Used to be my go-to! Listened to every episode multiple times. It was funny, irreverent, silly, and not nearly as forced as it is now. There’s always been an element of lets give the host some leeway as we hear and laugh at the same story for the 283rd time and pretend it’s new, but it feels and sounds different now. Nothing at all against the current hosts, but there seems to be some attempts to recreate some of the past magic by shoe-horning people into roles they don’t fit very well into. Gregg has an AMAZING music podcast, one of the best out there. Why not let him talk about music? If you still want to talk about movies, bring in a critic you haven’t burned a bridge with yet and let him/her talk about current movies. Hard to get through a full show anymore. I would agree with others in saying that the Patreon names bit is super tired and extremely skippable. Every time I used to hear ‘but first we need to thank…’ (I say used to because I gave up listening for a bit but recently tried to get through a couple episodes and just got bored), I reached for the +30 second skip button. Seems like I could hit it 20-30 times and we’d still be on the same list. Older shows are worth a listen. Some of the ones from 4-7 years ago are classics that I still go back to. Glad most of them haven’t bitten the digital dust, as some episodes conveniently have.

When they're "on," they're wonderfully entertaining. When they're not, it's painful. They can have a wonderful chemistry, yes, but there's a hubris there that can be intensely grating. Can't recommend it any more.Read full review »
