After Dunkirk and Tenet it seemed like maybe Christopher Nolan was losing his edge, but now we know that’s not the case because Oppenheimer is not just a masterful film but an incredible achievement. But it’s also the least Christopher Nolan movie of his movies because this is his first biographical picture.
No IMAX-level action set pieces. No major revelations or twists. No cross-cutting between 30 different plot points all converging on one big moment of truth. Instead the movie is 99% people talking in rooms in a massive and admittedly sometimes confusing web of he-said she-said.
Spanning decades, the film lays out the life and times of J. Robert Oppenheimer from his days as a student to being appointed director of the Manhattan Project and inventing and dropping the atomic bomb to becoming world famous but feeling really bad about all of it and eventually being investigated by the United States government for connections to communists and Soviet Union spies.
But all in all it is the single greatest expression of the Promethean myth in modern history: the man who stole fire from the gods (in this case harnessed the power of the universe) and presented this great technology to mankind, a tool which was immediately reformed into a weapon that to this day threatens to end human existence itself, and how he was persecuted and punished for this deed by the government he did it for and himself.
