The Equalizer 3 is a decent end to the Equalizer trilogy, a series of films following in the footsteps of John Wick, Taken, Jack Reacher, and nearly every Clint Eastwood movie whereby an older fella comes out of professional people killer retirement to once again punish those taking advantage of others in the classic Western style of one man versus a web of corruption, specifically in the “a stranger comes to town” style since this iteration takes place entirely in a small village in Sicily overrun by the mafia.
However, this movie is basically a “feel good” story within that genre, as the story lacks any meaningful sacrifice on the part of ancillary characters or even the Equalizer himself (AKA Robert McCall), greatly diminishing the overall emotional impact of the story. Put short, a problem arises and then McCall quickly and badassly takes care of it without issue or loss of life or anything at all really.
Watching Denzel Washington brutally murder bad guys will make you feel bloody righteous in the moment, but for lack of any deeper meaning or significance you’ll quickly forget this story. Feels good, but not memorable.
So is it bad? No. It’s just cinematic comfort food, so you’re not missing anything if you skip this one.
