Talk to Me is a refreshing take on the possession genre, taking the essence of an exorcism or seance movie and reducing it to an immature party drug allegory. The premise is so captivating and terrifying that the film doesn’t need to rely on jump scares, of which I don’t recall there being a single one—the mark of a true horror movie.
Instead the horror comes when you realize the complete lack of reverence that the young party kid cast has for discovering a method of communicating with spirits of the dead. Instead of falling to their knees and repenting to God having found proof of the afterlife, they film each other freaking out, not under the influence of drugs and alcohol, but under the influence of these ghosts they willingly allow into their bodies. The kids eventually become addicted to the act, including the dopamine hit from carelessly posting these videos online. The horrific thing is that nobody is afraid of the horrific thing happening right before their eyes and iPhones.
This of course reflects the age we live in, where nothing is too sacred to post and everyone seems keen to take a video of someone in distress rather than step in and help them out. Carelessly conjuring fiendish spirits for the almighty click is a terrifying glance at how the pursuit of digital attention is slowly but surely dehumanizing and desensitizing all of us digital addicts as we communicate exclusively through our devices instead of face to face, hence the brilliance of the title.
