❝I don’t know much about Godzilla movies, but I know enough about movies to know that Godzilla Minus One has everything the body needs:
Starting with the big stuff, Godzilla himself is absolutely incredible. The visual effect is of such a high quality that at times I felt I had the suspension of disbelief of a child. But that’s all just a cherry on top. Down at ground level is a story that leaves nothing to be desired. Among other things it’s the tale of one man’s struggle to rid himself of his survivor’s guilt following the Japanese army’s defeat after World War II.
On a larger scale the story is a metaphor for post-WWII Japan’s fear of a loss of cultural identity to the looming threat of American influence and power done in the most Japanese way possible with a giant city-destroying monster and crowds of people running away screaming. Even if that’s not really your thing or you’ve never seen a single Godzilla movie you can and should still check it out because this movie brings it on every level.❞
