“As a Rapid Response Nurse and some one with rectal prolapse after child birth, I caution you in how you advertise this predicament. It’s an incredibly painful and embarrassing complication that shouldn’t be used as an example as a funny situation in a podcast. Teaching other nurses that this is a crazy, unheard of experience that “oh my goodness, can you believe it?”, is not professional and not beneficial to the patient. Rectal prolapse is more common than you think, but usually manageable with high fiber diet and good bowel hygiene, not always complicated by external prolapse.
I wouldn’t want to be this patient, knowing it’s now fodder for learning on a now sensationalized topic. I’m sure you were trying to be respectful when talking to the patient, but the giggles throughout your podcast depict otherwise and set an example of what you really think. You are the role model for lots of new nurses and please try to set an example to always be mindful in preserving patient dignity.”
